About
Pangea World Theater, Pillsbury House + Theatre, Walker Art Center and Danspace Project have been collaborating to support visionary Black Dance Artist Leslie Parker as she builds a multi-year body of work titled Call to Remember.
As part of the collaboration, Pangea World Theatre and Pillsbury House + Theatre are partnering to present The Black Dance Improvisation Festival. The Black Dance Improvisation Festival stems from a 2022 series of Black Dance Improvisation workshops led by Leslie Parker, Marlies Yearby and Nia Love and honors the spirit of Arts Ancestor Laurie Carlos who fostered the development of countless artists and built community among artists and audiences through sharing food.
The Black Dance Improvisation Festival also advances Leslie Parker’s mission to celebrate and bring more artists into the practice of Black Dance Improvisation and to conjure ‘Black Space’, liberated creative space centering Black freedom and Black joy.
Dance artists Ashe Jaafaru, Ryan-Olivia Lundy, Tumelo Khupe, Jazz Casteneda, Arneshia Williams, and Imagine Joy were invited by Leslie and commissioned by Pillsbury and Pangea to create short solo works for the Festival. Queen Drea will DJ.
