Pangea World Theater is pleased to present Death and the Maiden, by Ariel Dorfman, a timeless and timely political thriller that explores the scars of repression on our bodies, psyches and societies. Death and the Maiden will be performed at Pangea World Theater from October 25-November 2.
Set in an unnamed country emerging from a U.S.-backed dictatorship, the play explores the ripple effects of state violence. With an unknown visitor arriving at their secluded beach house one night, Paulina Escobar is sure she recognizes the guest’s voice from her own harrowing detention years before. Deciding to take justice into her own hands, the following 24 hours are full of tension and intrigue as Paulina’s husband is forced to decide whether to believe his wife or the seemingly respectable Dr. Roberto Miranda.
This riveting white knuckle thriller is an intellectual and emotional tug of war about time, trauma and the meaning of justice.
The Death and the Maiden ensemble includes Claudia Garcia, Tyler Stamm, and Tom Whalen*. Director Ismail Khalidi’s artistic team features lighting design by Jasmin Garcia, set design by Sadie Ward, costume design by Clair Frederick, and stage management by Suzanne Victoria Cross. Khalidi is a Directing Fellow at Pangea World Theater.
